Sonographic Localization of a Nonpalpable Tissue Expander Port
Department of Radiology, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts.
Department of Radiology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, 75 Francis Street, Boston, MA 02115. Subcutaneous soft tissue expanders are used by plastic and reconstructive surgeons for a variety of skin defects. Gradual distension of the expander with saline allows progressive growth of the overlying skin. Access to the expander is via a subcutaneous port, which is easily palpable by the physician. Occasionally, due to overlying scar tissue or migration, the port is lost. In these cases, ultrasound is a useful method of rapid noninvasive localization of the lost tissue expander access port.
