Clinical Care Centers for Congenital Heart Disease, Division of Pediatric Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon A retrospective analysis of 19 children who underwent either aortic valve replacement or aortic valve commissurotomy was performed to determine whether aortic anulus size can be determined accurately and reliably by two-dimzensional echocardiography. The aortic anulus was measured trom the parasternal long axis of the left ventricle and trom the apical long axis in end-systole and endw-astole. These measurements were then compared with surgical measurements. Measurements from the parasternal long axis view correlated be-st to surgical measurements (systole r 0.0970, P < 0.001, SEE 1*78 mm diastole r = 0.955, P K 0.001, SEE = 1.99 mm). In our study preoperative two-almensional ech cardiographic prediction of aortic. anulus size was reliable.
