Sonographic Diagnosis of Reteinal Detachnents

Real-time sonography is a valuable tool in establishing the diagnosis of retinal detachment in eyes with visually opaque media. It also can add valuable information regarding the condition of the subretinal space in all patients with retinal detachment. This paper reviews basic anatomy of the eye and types and descriptions of retinal detachments, their causes, and some of the abnormal processes involved. A basic scanning method for evaluating the eye is discussed, followed by methods of differentiating between abnormal conditions with similar appearances. It is within the scope of the general sonographer to provide accurate, reliable information and ultimately affect the timing and planning of surgery.
