Prenatal Ultrasound Diagnosis of Meconium Peritonitis Secondary to Cystic Fibrosis

Neil H. Weiner

Central Maine Imaging Center, Lewiston, Maine

This case study describes the ultrasound diagnosisof meconium peritonitis associated with cysticfibrosis. Meconium peritonitis is an intense, inflammatory reaction of the fetal peritoneum due tointrauterine bowel perforation. Because meconiumileus secondary to cystic fibrosis can account for25% to 40% of meconium peritonitis cases, cysticfibrosis must be a strong consideration. Accurateprenatal ultrasound diagnosis of meconiumperitonitis and subsequent testing for cystic fibrosiscan aid in establishing an appropriate surgical andtherapeutic management plan.

Key Words: meconium peritonitis • cystic fibrosis • ultrasound
