The authors' purpose was to evaluate the currentpractice of registered diagnostic medicalsonographers, with specialty in abdomen, of theAmerican Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers(ARDMS).A randomized sample of 2350registered diagnostic medical sonographers withspecialty in abdomen were chosen from theARDMS database to complete a task survey on theInternet. The survey consisted of a235-item questionnairewith regard to demographics, education, and frequency of specific sonograms performed indaily practice. Compared with the 1994 survey, registrantshave received more formal education andless on-the-job training. Traditional tasks remain thepredominant responsibilities of registered diagnosticmedical sonographers with specialty in abdomen, including liver, biliary system, gallbladder, kidney, and pancreas, but a small minority of sonographersalso perform liver transplant, kidney transplant, trauma, and musculoskeletal sonograms, anduse newer technologies, such as power Doppler andtissue harmonic sonography, as well as transrectalsonography. The authors conclude that the ARDMSabdomen examination reflects current practice, butfuture revisions should include a small percentageof items in these newer areas.
