Utilizing 3D Ultrasound to Visualize Trisomy 18 Abnormalities in the First Trimester

Kay Ballard-Taraschi, RT, RDMS

Dawn Roberts, RDMS

Susan Thompson, RDMS, RVT

Cytogenic abnormalities affect 1 in every 200 children; they are associated with multiple congenital abnormalities and with a high perinatal mortality rate. The long-term prognosis is usually poor. Knowing these facts, early detection is of great importance, both for the expecting parents and the health care providers. The following case was an incidental finding on a routine ultrasound scan. Using 3D ultrasound proved to be invaluable in helping the parents to better understand and visualize the defects.

Key Words: cystic hygroma • omphalacele • trisomy 18 • limb body wall complex • 3D ultrasound • multiplanar reformatted view
