The Role of Sonographic Evaluation of the Pregnant Cervix in Predicting Preterm DeliveryOver the past three decades, the incidence of premature delivery of infants in the United States has not improved despite great medical advancements in knowledge and technology. Some patients proceed unstoppable toward preterm delivery. Other patients threaten preterm with early cervical change, which, when detected, leads to successful intervention. Sometimes, patients who prompted medication and activity restriction carry to term. Gazing back at 41 weeks gestation, these patients may wonder what the fuss was all about. Other times, a patient may demonstrate no apparent cervical change until suddenly, without appreciable warning, her cervix rapidly dilates despite medical interventions and attempts to delay the inevitable delivery. The scenario too often ends with the precipitous delivery of a preterm neonate. This article is a literature review that assesses the role of sonographic evaluation of the pregnant cervix.
