There are several imaging modalities in the radiology field, and each one has distinct strengths and weaknesses when compared to another. Sonography is a very useful tool in the characterization of a palpable lump. The three modalities of computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and diagnostic x-ray are a combined force in the evaluation and diagnosis of bone lesions. Sonographers are occasionally the first evaluators of a nonspecific lump that turns out to be a bone neoplasm. Such a case is presented. The discussion is twofold. The basic features of sonographic evaluation of a palpable lump are reviewed as well as the specific lesion known as the aneurysmal bone cyst, which was the final diagnosis in this case study.

Key Words: aneurysmal bone cyst • osteolytic • osteosarcoma • giant cell tumor
