Ultrasound is a valuable and practical extension of a clinical ophthalmic examination. It is noninvasive, does not use ionizing radiation, is portable, and allows for rapid acquisition and assessment of images. Acoustic characterization of orbital lesions often permits a secure clinical diagnosis to be established. Orbital ultrasound is thus a highly reliable, easily performed examination technique which can guide further diagnostic testing and monitor the patient's response to clinical therapy.

Key Words: ophthalmic ultrasound • real-time ultrasound • orbital tumors • orbital inflammation
