A Discussion of the 1986 Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers Professional Profile Survey

Statistical analyses were carried out on the data from the 1986 Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers Professional Profile Survey. Among other findings, it was determined that men have a higher median salary than women, even after adjusting for such factors as educanal level and job responsibilities, but that the salary discrepancy is apparent only for those with more than 3 years of experience on the job, and only for those working in a hospital, a private office or clinic, or a university medical center. It was also found that non-Caucasian staff sonographers make more than Caucasian staff sonographers, but for those holding positions other than that of staff sonographer, the Caucasian and non Caucasian salaries do not differ. Finally, salaries of those who have a bachelor's degree in ultrasound are comparable to the salaries of those who have a bachelor's degree in an area other than ultrasound, after adjusting for the number of years of experience in the ultrasound field.
