Echocardiographic Assessment of Left Ventricular Structure in Hypertension and the Impact on Clinical OutcomesCardiovascular Division, Washington University School of Medicine, Saint Louis, MO., waggonera{at}msnotes.wustl.edu Hypertension (HTN) is present in nearly 50 million individuals, or approximately 29% of the adult US population. The prevalence of HTN is higher in men, increases with age, and varies among ethnic groups. Alterations of left ventricular structure and function can be present in patients with HTN and accurately characterized by echocardiography. The presence of left ventricular hypertrophy with increased left ventricular mass has prognostic implications in patients with HTN.
