Diagnostic ultrasound is the method of choice for screening suspected urinary tract obstructions. Recent research indicates that renal resistive indices obtained with duplex Doppler sonography are useful in distinguishing obstructive from nonobstructive renal disease processes in the nonpregnant patient with a dilated collecting system. During pregnancy, hydronephrosis is present in 80% of cases. However, maternal hydronephrosis in the pregnant patient is indistinguishable with real time ultrasonic imaging from significant obstructive uropathy. This prospective study was undertaken to evaluate renal resistive indices in pregnant women. Doppler assessment revealed no significant difference (P < 0.01) between hydronephrotic and nonhydronephrotic kidneys.

Key Words: maternal hydronephrosis • ultrasound • resistive indices
