The Use of Ultrasound in Exiracorporeal Membranous Oxygenation TherapyRadiology Department, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy is used to treat certain neonates with respiratory failure. Ultrasound is a useful tool in the ECMO therapy process. Diagnostic medical sonography is used to determine which patients would most benefit from this treatment, and for evaluation of the patient during ECMO therapy. This paper discusses what ECMO therapy is, which patients receive it, and some changes that may be observed sonographically in patients who undergo this treatment.
