A survey of image artifacts in real-time ultrasound is presented. Spatial mapping of detected echoes is based on several assumptions, and violation of any of these assumptions creates artifacts. Drawings and sonograms are used to illustrate image artifacts, including partial volume, attenuation, refraction, reverberation, mirror image, side lobe, comet tail, ring down, and range ambiguity.

Key Words: artifacts • comet tail • enhancement • mirror image • misregistration • refraction • reverberation • ring down • shadowing • side lobe
